Unfiltered golden yellow color.
Some presence of clove spice, banana and wheat. Citrus aromas also present.
Two finger, off white head on pour.

Not a lot of lace in the glass.
Hops and wheat are well balanced. Clove and banana are mild and enjoyable.
Light bodied. Easy to drink.

Boulder Beer's Looking Glass Series, Sweaty Betty, is another of the popular American Pale Wheat Ales. This style seems to give other wheat ales such as Hefe's, a run for the money. Both are found in spring/summer as low alcohol, refreshing quenchers, but in reality, they are two completely different styles.

I have had several American Pale Wheat Ales this summer and find them curious as a style, but refreshing nonetheless. Sweaty Betty is one of those pauses that refresh, and she does so without breaking a sweat. (Didn't think I'd go for the pun?) Sweaty Betty is the fifth of the aforementioned  'Looking Glass Series' from Boulder and was introduced in 2004. She is done in the Bavarian style, according to Boulder's website.

When it's hot out, put your arm around Betty. She can handle the humidity, just fine.

Clear, brilliant light copper color.
Strong presence of citrus hops and light malts detected in aroma.
Two finger, off white head on pour.

Spiderweb lace coating on side of glass.
Hops taste up front, but not as bold as the smell. Malt finish.
Medium bodied. Easy to drink.

Mojo as a term, is something that keeps you going. It's your groove, your vibe, your energy source. From the bottle's label it reads:

 Mo-Jo ('mO-(")jO) n.1: a magic spell or charm; magical power 2: herbaceous ale that summons hop attacks.

For an IPA, it resonates with that emotion, because you could session these all day and not get your over the top IPA burnout.It is an American IPA, done in the English style as the label reads. I had the good fortune to have some of this at the Boulder Brewery last fall, fresh from their taproom. In the bottle, it is nearly just as good.

Clear and copper in color.
Bread-like malt with distinct but buried aromas of hops.
Two finger, off white head upon pour that dissipates slowly and leaves little cover.
Tastes just as it smells but with sharp hops at the end.

Some lace coating on side of glass.
Light to medium bodied. Easy to drink.

Here's a beer in the American Pale Ale category that defies the description. Now while it is a great, drinkable beer with some quirky characteristics, I didn't find that it was exactly like any other American Pale Ales that I have tasted before.

It is a super little beer that needs its own category. It's really easy to drink and the malts and hops play around in an off beat way. But that is exactly why I think I liked it in the first place.

Nearly solid amber color.
Malty, tangy pine hops scent.
Tall, tan head upon pour. Dissipates slowly leaving short cover.

Great lace coating on side of glass.
Medium carbonation with hops finish.
Peppery; warms the back of the tongue.
Medium bodied, big flavor.

A craft beer with a crafty name.  Everybody and their brother has a "Winter" this and a "Christmas" that beer or ale on the shelves.  Well the folks at Boulder put a great spin on naming it, reminding us that this is indeed a winter style.  Kind of catchy the "Never Summer" name.  I like the ale as much as the thought that went into the name.

The ale is a robust amber color and gives off malt and hops aromas, but the taste catches you at the back of the tongue and throat.  It leaves a warming, peppery flavor that is just drying enough to make you want to sip some more.  Sip after sip, the ale's mild soothing heat wraps its way around you like a great big stadium blanket.  The perfect tonic while having that Christmas tree bonfire.

It could easily have been named "Always Winter", but it's fine just as it is.  Enjoy it while it's still winter!

Hazy amber color.
Malty grain sweet smell with pine hops scent.
Tall, off-white head that dissipates slowly.

Medium carbonation with hops finish.
Full bodied, big flavor.

Grim Reaper's Eulogy
This beer was sampled at the GABF (Great American Beer Festival) in September. It had me hooked and so upon return to home base, a purchase of their 22 oz. bomber bottle was procured. The taste was memorable and held up to the 1 oz. samples proffered up at GABF. While it has a great smell of hops from the dry infused process, it just slightly showed up in the taste. All in all, it is still a great craft beverage and one not to be missed. 

"Colorado's first microbrewery", is how they refer to themselves, while the bottle cap proclaims the commemoration of their 30th anniversary. Boulder Beer's website explains how they grew out of a small farm house to where they are today. At GABF, I reaped samples of their other craft brews; many of which were found to be delightful. I will do my best to locate them and bring their reviews here in the future.
