Postmortem Brew Review
Hazy, golden orange color.
Citrus notes, spice and wheat aromas.
Two finger, fluffy white head. Foam leaves spotted lacing.
Banana and faint vanilla tasting with a creamy smooth, enveloping finish.
Light, creamy smooth mouth feel.

Grim Reaper's Eulogy
Wurzburger Hofbrau was founded way back in 1643 and is one of Germany's oldest brewers. This beer shows off their dedication to crafting wonderful beers, such as this Hefe. It is, as all good German beers are, brewed under the Bavarian purity law of 1516 (Reinheitsgebot). This means that Wurzburger Hofbrau has been creating beer for nearly 200 years prior to the law.

Wonderfully tasty and super easy to drink, give this one a try the next time you are ordering a Hefeweizen.

Postmortem Brew Review
Clear golden color.
Small bit of grain smell with bright hops.
Firm white full bubbled head.
Moderate amount of carbonation.
Very good lacing on glass.
Slight tartness and grainy malts up front with bittering hops finish.
Light, refreshing mouth feel and body.

Grim Reaper's Eulogy
I have had this Pils both in the bottle and on tap. On tap, it is much more fresh and flavorful than its bottle counterpart. But that should come as no surprise. Bottle beer sometimes sits on shelves or is subject to mishandling in temperature or light conditions. That is not to say this was the case with this bottle. It was tasty, but the same day I also happened to find it on draft at my local watering hole and it seemed far more lively in the glass.

It is a nice pilsener, not truly remarkable, but a good working standard of the style. I found it a bit drier than most and a little grainy at times during the session.

Nice golden color.
Lemon zest, biscuit and slight fruit notes.
One finger, firm white head. Foam leaves some spotted lacing.
Slightly sweet and fruity with a nice dry taste.
Good amount of carbonation; nice nucleation.
Light and airy mouth feel.

Grim Reaper's Eulogy
Bitburger has nearly 200 years of brewing expertise in crafting their beer according to the German Purity Law. Its dry-finished, hoppy taste has made Bitburger Premium Beer Germany’s no. 1 draught beer. And that is all you need to know about this beer, if you want to have one tremendous tasting pilsener brew.

Of course, with the above type container, you will need a few friends to polish this one off. Once you pop the stopper at the top, you will need to consume it quickly as freshness will tail off. No worries, I discovered they make tall-boy four packs of these. This is a totally fresh tasting German pilsener. Wunderbar!

Postmortem Brew Review
Murky golden yellow color; a little bit turbid in appearance.
Spice, banana, citrus fruit and bread on the nose.
Some good lacing at first from the near-white head.
Bready upfront with clove like spice and some citrus in taste. Hops finish is pronounced.
Moderate carbonation.
Light to medium bodied. Alcohol is only slightly detectable, if at all.
Complex for a hefe.

Grim Reaper's Eulogy
This is the Schneider version or a brew that is the result of a friendship between Brooklyn's Garrett Oliver and Schneider's Hans-Peter Drexler. The two brewers had admired each other's differences in styles; Garrett's hoppier side and Hans-Peter's soft & smoother style. This concept brought them together to produce a hoppy style wheat beer. This was a perfect collaborative symbiosis for the two brewers as well as the two styles. The resulting weissbock beer is dry-hopped using Hallertauer and Saphir hops. (Note: The body is a bit disturbed as it appears to be left unfiltered. Best to gently roll the bottle to incorporated any sediment residue.)

Who knew this could exist in a weiss? Certainly Garrett and Hans-Peter did. The ending result is a smooth and soft wheat beer that has a strongly pronounced amount of hops. Unusual for a wheat, but wonderful to behold.

Oh yeah, beware the generous 8.2% ABV in the equally generous 16.9 ounce bottle. This ain't your standard summer refresher hefeweizen. But, do enjoy, nonetheless. Their website called it "Hoppy Fireworks!"

I'd love to find some of the stateside Brooklyn equivalent.

Pours a dark ruby brown color.
First impression is an antiseptic nose, but then gives way to a smoky smell.
Off-white, two finger head. Modest head retention. Little lace.
Tastes like a BBQ pit smells, similar to cured smoked meats; bacon.
Moderate amount of carbonation.
Medium bodied. Intersting smoked flavors.

Grim Reaper's Eulogy
Bacon! Bacon-bacon-bacon-bacon-bacon! ! ! Silly as it sounds, it tastes a lot like bacon.  It is a trip for the senses. The first whiff revealed none of that. For some reason the smokebeer offed an aroma of a hospital ward. But then I took a less greedy inhale, and the smokiness did reveal itself. The smoke really came through upon drinking. Wow. You have to try for yourself. Not your average Marzen lager from Germany. I bet this pairs lovely with a ham and cheese sandwich!

An old brewery with an equally old looking label on the brown bottle.

Sweet maltiness. Banana notes.

Big, tightly bubbled white head that sticks around.
Bubbly, effervescent foam leaves behind little lacing.

Starts sweet in taste with malt and banana flavors. Finishes tart, tight and dry like champagne.
Big carbonation.
Light and dry mouth feel.

Grim Reaper's Eulogy
This is the year to replace your champagne or other fine sparkling wine with a beer. 2009 was the year of the beer.  For 2010, beer has become a suitable accompaniment for the holiday festivities. Infinium is the collaborative effort of two galactic and stellar breweries. The young meeting the old.  The master Jedi
Weihenstephan and the young knight Samuel Adams.

Weihenstephan: I cannot teach him. The boy has no patience.
Reinheitsgebot: He will learn patience.
Weihenstephan: Hmm, eh, much anger in him, like his father.
Reinheitsgebot: Was I any different when you taught me?
Weihenstephan: He is not ready.
Sam Adams: Yoda!?! I am ready...Ben, I can be a Jedi! Ben, tell him I'm ready...
Weihenstephan: Ready are you? What knows ready? For 800 years have I trained Jedi. My own counsel will I keep on who is to be trained! The Jedi must have the most deepest commitment, hmm, the most serious mind. This one, a long time have I watched. All his life has he looked away, to the future, to the horizon. Never his mind on where he was. Hmm! What he was doing! Hm..adventure! Eh, excitement. Heh, A Jedi craves not these things. You are reckless.
Reinheitsgebot: So was I, if you remember.
Weihenstephan: He is too old. Rest! Too old to begin the training!
Sam Adams: But I've learned so much.
Weihenstephan: (sigh) Will he finish what he begins?
Sam Adams: I won't fail you. I'm not afraid.
Weihenstephan: Wuuuh...you will be...you will be!

And it seems that the young apprentice of 25 years can learn a thing or two from the master of 1000 years. As we also know, the young Jedi did prove his worth in helping to topple the evil empire. It's no secret, Darth Vader is a Bud Light(saber) kinda' guy.

If you are in the market to try a bubbly brut beer, look no further. The foil neck wrapper has a 2010 printed on it, making me think that there will likely be several sequels.

Grim Reaper's Eulogy
One last bastion of Oktoberfest hanging out in my cooler. This one is the real deal from Germany, however, I felt it lacked a little bit of character. It was a bit more malty than I would care for in a fest beer, but still a well made brew just the same.

Paulaner has been making beer for a long time, so who am I to judge. I prefer some  of the other German Marzen's to this, but wouldn't turn it down just the same.

Rich

Malty and hops taste in good balance with malts leading.
Good carbonation.
Light mouth feel, best if not served ice cold.

Grim Reaper's Eulogy
This Oktoberfest by Beck's is quite a tasty devil. The only thing missing is a bit more punch on the ABV.  Most Marzens are in the 6% range but this one weighs in a a scant 5%.  No matter.  It is such a delicious and easy to drink Oktoberfest style beer, that the lighter alcohol content will keep you going.

I happened across this beer while in a remote part of central Florida this weekend.  A favorite haunt of mine, it's a small German bakery and deli on a country road in a town named Yalaha.  I ordered my sandwich and was blown away when I saw the German beer selection.  Having just missed their Oktoberfest-tivities, the fridge was well stocked with Marzen beers. Need I say more?  It went well with the German ham and Swiss cheese sandwich, oh yeah, and the German potato salad. Mmmmm.  Good eating and drinking for the Reaper! Muahaahaahaaaa!

Golden yellow color that's clear but translucent.
Malt and hops zip in the nose with malts leading.
White, one-fingered head that leaves spotty lacing.
Moderate carbonation.
Light bodied. Very easy to drink.

Grim Reaper's Eulogy
The Oktoberfest originated in 1810 in Munich Germany as a wedding celebration for the crown prince Ludwig of Bavaria.  This product was created especially for this event and is brewed usually for the Oktoberfest, now the largest beer festival in the world. Hofbrau Munchen is one of a selected group of breweries granted the privelidge of supplying the Oktoberfest with their products.  Using the highest quality ingredients HB's Oktoberfest specialty has its own distinctive and unmistakable taste.

...so says the back label of this delicious Oktoberfest. It is a fine example of the style.  Soft maltiness greets you upon the first sniff and at the tip of your tongue.  A light bodied, easy drinking sip will slide down the back of your throat and reveal just a touch of hops on the finish, smoothing out any over sweetness from the malt. It makes the beer easy to drink, but hides a slightly elevated ABV at 6.3%.  If you think about Oktoberfest, in Germany, what you are looking for is something light, tasty and also gets you, umm shall we say, in the fest mood.

Some might be inclined to say that it is just average for an Oktoberfest, but remember who the maker is - - Hofbrau. They have been at this for quite a long time.  The style has varied greatly by other brewers. This will bring you back to center, so you judge how others have tinkered in the style.  Put this beer on your 'must try' list for Oktoberfests to serve as an example of what the style is supposed to be like.

Note of caution: This is best served fresh, lest the green glass bottle 'skunk' the beer.  Happily, that was not the case with this batch.

This tasteful clemency with the noble hop flavor. brewed in the best premium quality, with light caramel and only the finest aroma hops. A very light and slim Pilsener style beer after very good foam, a full-bodied, soft and fresh taste and a pleasantly mild yeasty.

No, this isn't Yoda speak.  It's the just the Google translator from German to English coming through.  Pretty funny stuff....hmmm?

But seriously, this is just another fine pilsener style beer from Germany, where they pretty much make some of the best pilseners on the planet.  So pick one, pop one and pour one when you get the chance.  The musical jingle on the ceramic popper tops, get me every time!

Super easy to drink, even in the one pint size. This is also available in 12 ounce, but what the heck...go for the half liter!  Whatever you do, don't dunk any fruit in it!  Just enjoy it the way the brewers made it.

Grim Reaper's Eulogy
The history of this beer goes back to 1260 AD. That means, they know how to make beer, old school. Just a simple, easy, breezy wheat indulgence.  It's like drinking a loaf of bread in a glass!

This really hit the spot this evening.  I had worked up a thirst trying to select a draught that hadn't recently had the keg blown.  After five shutouts, I just picked it at random and viola'.  Lady luck was in the house.

It's smooth and almost creamy texture goes down easily on a hot summer night like tonight!

Another offering from the "World's Oldest Brewery."  This crystal clear wheat or kristall weissbier is just the thing for a 93 degree day.  But don't let it get warm.  The flavors open up and though they aren't distracting, the beer tastes best when chilly.  It will not weigh you down in the least.

Nearly as good as its big brother the hefe, Kristall Weissbier is perfect for warm days lazing by the pool.  I know from experience!

Creamy and sweet malt taste that leaves a pleasant thickness on the tongue.
Medium bodied mouth feel.

Grim Reaper's Eulogy
Just 8km off the Autobahn, at München-Salzburg exit “Hofoldinger Forst”, is the town of Aying.  It's just half an hour from the Bavarian capital of München.  I mention this because there is no speed limit on the Autobahn, so you can go as fast as hell to get there.  Pardon my language.

And you might want to get there in a hurry to sample this beer. But hold on a minute.  It's exported to the US-of-A so, no hurries and no worries.  Slow down, put the Porsche back in the garage and sally on down to your local spot to get some of the greatest Doppelbock on earth.

But if you do find yourself in Germany and only have enough Euro's for a great beer and not a Porsche, take the train.  The brewery happens to be just 300 meters from the train station.  What luck!  Staying the night?  How about the “Brauereigasthof Hotel Aying” for accommodations?  It too is a stone's throw away. The Brauerei will even pick up hotel guests if you call in advance.

So about this brew?  It is sweet, malty and delicious.  It even comes with a Celebrator goat charm around each bottle neck.  It's kinda like the Cracker-Jack® of beer!

This Brauhaus has been at it since before the German Purity law of 1516.  How long?  The Weihenstephener (easier to say after sampling several of their brews) Brauerei has been practicing since 1040 !  That is remarkable.  So how's the beer you say?  Well, their dedication to craft delivers a crisp, light and delicious beer like no other.  You can read more about it on their website, in the language of your choice.  This beer is enjoyed the world over.  You should enjoy it too.

Olde Skool German Bock bier.  So old school, the brewery dates back to 1050. Damn! 1000 years ago. They have been busy making beer for a long time.  Oh yeah, back in the day!  Hey, check out this video about Weltenburger. Makes you want to book a trip to the 600 B.C. Monastery.  The Hallertau hops region is only a few miles from this Monastery/Brewery.

It pours dark into the glass leaving very little head and lacing.  Though higher in alcohol, you really won't notice it in the taste.  But do pay a trip to the website and also get your hands on some of this Bock.  It's like a postcard!  And one more note...it's the oldest dark beer in the world.

The cloistered monks of Weltenburg could have done anything with the time they have on their hands.  Let's thank goodness they used it perfecting the art of brewing.

Ingredients: Water, Barley & Hops, Yeast.  That is clearly stated on the label. Straight forward. Pure and simple.  The only way to make this fancy was to put it in one of those swing-top popper bottles.  Nice.

Recommended by my beer-tender Brogan, it was consumed in a taaallllllllll glass, making it even fancier!  And there it was in all its rich brown splendor, waiting to be enjoyed.  It's bottle fermented and non-filtered.  The real trick is to swirl the last couple of ounces in the bottle just before finishing the pour.  It releases all that yeast goodness into the top of the glass.  Yum.  Try the Moose.

Grim Reaper's Eulogy
This pilsener is done in a lager style, bottom fermented and rings in with 33 IBU's.  That's right, as much as any average pale ale would have.  Now that you know this, lagers don't seem so bad.  And they are not, especially when they are made by the first German brewer to make pilseners in the old style.

Fresh off the tap, smooth and so easy to enjoy, Radeberger Pilsner makes a great starter or equally a great beer to finish your evening.  Maybe even your all night beer?  I will leave that up to your discretion.
